For once I agree with HOPLITE2 that W!. J!. Slim was the best tactical commander, and have given him a big thumbs up!.

For all those who can only think of Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, or General George Patton, I am sorry to burst your bubbles - but the greatest general of World War 2 was:

Georgy Konstantinovich Zhukov

Read up about Georgy K!. Zhukov and learn!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The best would would be Montgomery, of the British 8th Army in North Africa and Western Europe, even though Operation Market Garden fell on it's ***!.!.!.

The most hard driven determined would be Patton!.

The most expericened is either Erwin Rommel or Yamanoto!.

NOTE(Eisenhower and Omar Bradly and Ramstadt were also exceptional)

McCarthur was ok, even though he was crazy and wanted to nuke China when the war ended, the fool!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Depends on how you define 'greatest'!. Tactically, Rommel was probably the best!. For strategic excellence, Eisenhower gets my vote!. I think one key consideration should be that the general has consistently achieved results, preferably over different theatres of war!. If he is a mere a 'one hit wonder' i!.e!. made his name over the conduct of only one famous battle!. Then he wouldn't be in!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

For the US, its either Patton, Eisenhower, MacArthur, Marshall, Bradley, Nimitz, or Halsey!.

Marshall was probably better than Eisenhower since he plan Operation Overlord but many thought Eisenhower did which he was mostly known for!.

Halsey was probably better than Nimitz even though he was under Nimitz, Halsey particapated in the battles while Nimitz observe from somewhere!. Halsey was also knighted by the British Empire!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
