Sparta was just a collection of villages in southern Greece!. They were just people!. True, they were considered the best warriors in the Greek world, but they had there fair share of losses!. They continually failed to conqure Argos, another city state!. And a bit after the Peloponnisan War they faded into insignificance!. Alexander the Great didn't even bother to conqure them they were so weak!. Easily, the Spartans are the most exagerated society to ever exist!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

No country was Sparta!. Sparta, being a polis (city-state), was part of the mainland of Greece!. Sparta has its origins in the hypothesized Dorian migration/invasion!. After finally settling down in 950 BC, The Dorians, already an aggressive people, began dominating the local countryside, enslaving the Messenian peoples to do their work!. These "slaves" were called helots and they were used to the farm the large plains of barley and tend to any other services the "Spartan State" needed done!. The Spartans were not brutal, compared to other cultures!. They were however, efficient which meant that some brutality did leak into their training exercises for the small boys and young men who trained in the Agoge (training center for Spartan boys!.) They were physically fit, because they had to endure long treks when off to war, and their women had to be fit in order to produce healthy offspring!. The advantage to their fighting was the customary Greek phalanx formation, but also their incredible training!. Spartan warriors could thrust a spear that much harder into the chest of the enemy!. also, when waves of enemies slammed into their infantry line, they would absorb the weight of the blow, then heave with all their might so that they might deliver a more effective spear thrust!. This made them a walking machine of death!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Sparta was a Greek "polis" (state-city) and now is a poor village !.
They were not brutal! they were educated and grown up as "soldiers" ; they lived in barracks , had common meals and they had only to practice war games! They did not work in the fields (there were slaves for this job) because they were "homoioi" (equals) ; The same amount of land was assigned to each of them , there was no money in Sparta, nobody could sell or buy land ; there were two kings but they were "equal" to the others; they were the best warriors of the time but!.!.there were a limited number of "homoioi" and after a battle it was difficult to replace the dead!.
They were educated to suffer and they did not care about being killed!.
Before living the city for a war the mothers used to say
"come back with your shield or on it" ( come back as a winner or dead!")
When they were no more able to keep the fixed number they started to put in some "low class men" who did not share the same capacity of fighting and the decline of Sparta was rapid!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The Spartans were Doric Greeks, who came from the north, and conquered and colonized a place in the Peloponessis named "Lakonia!." Reportedly, they conducted wars against the "Helots," who had the same name as that of their own serfs or servants!. The Helots were apparently the descendants of earlier Achaean Greeks, such as the ones that fought the Trojan War, before their societies were weakened by something!. That may have been long droughts, earthquakes, or volcanoes!.

After the Romans conquered Greece, the Spartans, like other Greeks, became their subjects!. There's a story about a slave who wa named "Spartacus," who led a slave revolt in Italy!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
