The Suez Crisis of 1956 was a very important event in British history!. The British and French invaded Egypt after Nasser renationalized the Suez canal!. However, they were forced to withdraw after the Americans refused to support the invasion!.

This was very significant:

1!. !.It showed that Britain could no longer act independently in world affairs without the United States' support!.

2!. It showed that Britain was no longer an Imperial Power!. Most of the remaining colonies were given their independence in the years after the Suez Crisis!.

3!. It led to the resignation of Anthony Eden, the Prime Minister!. He was replaced by Harold Macmillan!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The King died, then Elizabeth was crowned the Queen

King George VI had surgery to fix a case of lung cancer in 1951, but died in his sleep at the age of 56 on 6th of February 1952 and was buried at St George's Chapel on his Windsor Castle estate, after 16 years on the throne, following the abdication of his brother Edward Windsor (King Edward VIII) in 1936!.

The King's eldest daugther 25-year-old daughter Elizabeth replaced her father, King George VI, as monarch following his death on 6 February 1952!. The princess formally proclaimed herself Queen and Head of the Commonwealth and Defender of the Faith in February 1952
