Question: Didn't Most Ordinary Germans Join The Nazi Party In The Same Way Americans Become Republicans or Democrats!?
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Well as you know any American can join either party at any time!. After Hitler took power, thousands of people trying to help themselves out joined the Nazi Party!. They knew they would get many benefits from being part of the party!. After Nazi officials realized what was happening they made a quota of how many people could join the party each year!.

Hopefully I helped you out Das Reich!.

PS-I read a book called Das Reich!. It followed the 3rd SS Panzer division!. It was very good!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

NO - --
and as much as I like Patton even Patton had it wrong!
Once the Nazis were in power by 1934 they made the Nazi Party the ONLY Party in Germany and if you did not belong to the Nazi Party then the assumption was that you were some sort of terrorist and thus you were likely to be hauled off to a detention camp!. On election day you could not sit at home playing with your Wii, you HAD To vote and you had best vote Ja/Yes on an issue or else your name would be jotted down in a book and handed over to your neighborhood party leader who would soon have an earnest discussion about your lack of patriotism!.
Yes many ordinary Germans did join the Nazi Party but many others had no choice in the matter since the Nazi Party was the only legal party in Germany after 1934!. And not joining was not an option - - - much as Union shops in America make it mandatory that workers wages support the Union thus in Germany a portion of your wage went to the Nazi Party!.

(Note many leading Republicans argue for One Party Rule in America so things truly have not changed)!.!.

Patton was wrong about quite a lot of things, including making other people die for their country (in any protracted war, victory will go not to the side with more killing power but to the side that can soak up the punishment - like the North Vietnamese)!.
To return to the issues of why people joined the Nazis, no!. The Nazis were the one party that controlled the state, so many people joined to further their careers!. The same reason does not operate to anything like the same extent in the US!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes, and General George Patton got in a lot of trouble for saying the exact same thing!.

EDIT: response to one of the answers: "the U!.S!. has a lot of poor"!. Comparing out poor to the poor in other nations we have almost NONE!. During time just after the fall of the Soviet Union a Russian head of state went through one of our ghettos/slums and remarked "if this is your slum!.!.!. we'll take three!

I work in the service industry (pest control) and three of the companies that I worked with had MANY government contracts to service "poor People's housing" etc!. With the exception of their WAY of living, the actual material things in their apartments were FAR Superior to what I can afford, and most of their children are very much overweight (and on food stamps)!. People that I work with have children that wear "hand-me-downs" while the "poor People" get large checks to buy their children clothes at the beginning of every school year!. I regularly wake them up to do the services (they don't have jobs and they are still in bed at 10:00!.!.!.) If I wasn't raised with a work ethic and had a few morals of my own, I would be "Poor" too!Www@QuestionHome@Com

In my experiance most poeple don't join political parties, America may be different, but where I come form only a percentage of the middle classes join political parties!. The rich only join if they have an agenda they want put forward, and the poor never join!. And the USA has a lot of poor!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

not really actually, because of the great depression a bunch of new parties sprung up to take power, Hitler tried a coup, failed and went to jail, when he came out he toke power legally by promising to regain German power lost in World war I!. the way he legally gained power though is sketchy because anyone who opposed him died!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
