Question: Victorian Women's Work: What is a 'Companion'!?
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
One of the very few acceptable jobs for a gentlewoman in those days!. A lady's companion would be from an equal class, and be either unmarried or a widow!. She would read to her employer, run errands, chaperone her, etc!. A companion would not be a servant, but might be treated as such by a not very nice employer!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

a companion was a middle class single lady, who accompanied an upper class lady out and about (ladies were expected to have a chaperone at all times in public), who read to and sewed with her lady!.although a companion was employed as a companion she would still higher than the servants and therefore did not eat meals with the servants or with her lady!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
