With the exception of the death of Princess Diana, there are those who believe that the world's most "shocking" events all share something in common - they all took place in the United States of America!.

In my humble opinion, Live Aid, both in Philadelphia and London, were not shocking in any way or form!.

[4] Tienanmen Square Protests [1989]

[5] World Trade Center Collapse [ 2001]

All of these event left me with a great feeling of loss and wonderment at mans Cruelty and Genius!.

Now, as to the question, do you mean "shook" the world or "shock" the world!?

I find it shocking that it took the Iranians 26 years to retaliate for the CIA coup of '53 that put the Shah and SAVAT in power, and I find it even more shocking that it took another 22 years after that to hit the devil where he lived!. 9/11 was inevitable, it was just a question of 'when and where!?'!.

I find it shocking that after the lessons of the 60s, the streets are empty as we roll into Afghanistan and Iraq!.

I find it shocking that after Watergate and Iran-Contra we tolerate the Patriot Act without a whimper!.

I find it shocking that with the most powerful tool ever put into the hands of the hoi poloi (the internet), education, knowledge and understanding are on the decline!.

I find it shocking that with the US and CIA history of human rights violations and the ouster of democratically elected reform governments the world over and their replacement by tyrannical, corrupt, bloodthirsty madmen, people wonder why there is a overwhelming groundswell of Anti-Americanism around the globe and that bigots and morons like Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly and Rush Limbaugh actually have an audience!.

I find it shocking that in spite of all the evidence to the contrary, people in the USA still believe the myth that Pearl Harbor was a surprise or unprovoked or that the bombs at Nagasaki and/or Hiroshima were somehow justified and that they had anything whatsoever to do with the end of the war or actually saved any lives (Japanese or allied) or brought about the Japanese surrender!.

There are a lot more!. Dallas was hardly a shock and even Jack and Bobby feared (knew) it was coming!. The moon landing was no shock at all!. It was the culmination of a massive, highly advertised, concentrated program!. Live Aid was a gimmick PR event which has been repeated for countless causes throughout history!. Princess Di!? Of what consequence in the larger scheme of things!. Tragic death to be sure, but no more so than Grace Kelly and meaningless to the world at large!. The Twin Towers!? Too little, too late to the Islamic patriots who had an axe to grind for US interference in Iran (putting the Shah on the Peacock Throne), in Iraq (putting the Baath Party in charge and Saddam at the helm) in Afghanistan (putting the Taliban in power and training and arming Osama)!. It was not all that much of a shock as an answer to the question "When and where will they hit us back!?"

As to events that shook the world, how about:

Elvis Presley releases "Heartbreak Hotel" and the Rock and Roll generation is born!. Couple that with James Dean and "Rebel Without a Cause" and the entire social structure of Beaver Cleaver's America was on the run!. (Thank you Alan Freed) (More than 50 years, but only by a couple!.)

The Berlin Wall is dismantled - now that one took real guts!.

Solidarity and the Round Table Talks - how could it possibly happen there and then!?

The internet becomes public!. How could CIA and the Pentagon let such a dynamic tool loose amongst the unwashed masses!? Ah, well, nobody realizes what they've got at their fingertips so no harm, no foul!.

The introduction (discovery/identification) of AIDS in the gay community of New York and in Africa!. I'll leave it to Dr!. Alan Cantwell, the CDC, Fort Detrick, NIH, NCI, CDC, WHO, HR 15090, the Hepatitis B and Smallpox programs and Robert McNamara to explain that one!.

'Shocks' and 'shooks' are easy!. After Chicago '68, Kent State, Jackson State, Tiananmen Square, the March on Washington, the tribulations of the ANC, the Khmer Rouge, AIM, the PLO and countless similar events and organizations, one wonders why we let them keep getting away with it!. Perhaps that is the most shocking of all!. Maybe George Orwell was right, but kudos to Anthony Burgess and Ayn Rand for those fleeting glimmers of hope!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
