There were 'corridors' road, rail & air that allowed travel through East German territory!. These corridors were sealed off from the rest of East Germany!.
Despite being deep within East Germany - West Berlin was part of West Germany, so once you were there you could jump on a train, or plane to anywhere you liked!.

Technically, Berlin is in East Germany!. But since it was the capital city, it was therefore very important for both the U!.S!. and U!.S!.S!.R to have!. So it was decided that it would be split in half (i've heard it described as an island of freedom in a sea of communism!.) People would find many ways to get to west Germany, and risked their lives to do so!. They would attempt to climb over the wall or get over any way they could!. They would also pay people to smuggle them out in the trunks of their cars and trucks!. Basically they would do anything imaginable to get to the other side of that wall!.

Ad on- The economic conditions were also drastically different!. Soviet ruled East Berlin was consumed by poverty, while West Berlin was one of the richest and most advanced parts of the world!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
