Helots are greek infantry!. Named after the bronze shield they carried!. There were 7,000 other Greeks from the other greek city states at the pass in addition to the Spartans!. After the greeks were surrounded most of the greeks retreated except for the 300 Spartans and 1000 Thespians!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

First of all helots were the serfs of Sparta and not hoplites, only full Spartiate citizens could fight as hoplites which they had trained forn all their lives!.
It is estimated that there were in total, to start with, 7,000 hoplites, or heavily armed infantry with an un-numbered amount of light troops in support!.
In the end, when Leonidas found out that the Persian Immortals had outflanked him he ordered all remaining troops to retreat apart from 700 Thespians who he asked to buy as much time as possible for himself and the Spartans to hold the Persians forn as long as they could!.
Masses of troops were not needed in the narrow pass of Thermopylae and well trained ranks of hoplites were all that was needed at the time!.
The battle of Platauea, however, fought the next year was a different story involving the entire Spartan army!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Helots are the serfs of Sparta, I think the other answerer is thinking of hoplites (a hoplon means a piece of armour), confusingly Helots were at Thermopylae, most likely performing as squires to the Spartans (they were all killed)!. The trouble with calculating the numbers is that the source is Herodotus, who frankly admits that his sources (eyewitnesses) were not always reliable!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
