In order to stop the advance of the Germans, the British built a trench!. The Germans then knew how far away they had to be from those trenches to avoid enemy fire!. The British frequently stormed out of the trenches toward the Germans (because British generals couldn't think of anything else to do) and were mowed down by machine gun fire!. So that land where they would be hit by enemy fire was No Man's Land because no man could survive there!. This was trench warfare!.

Well the no man's land was the place between the two enemy's fighting!. This area was filled with barb-wire and mines so that the soldiers approaching would get blown up or severely cut and dismembered!. Their was the use of Poison gas and mustard gas as well, this would burn the lungs of the soldiers!. The no man's land was a place where hundreds of bodies would be found after a battle because most of the soldiers died there since they had to go near the enemy to shoot and kill the other!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

WW1 was for most of the time, a stalemate between Germany and her Allies and their opponents!. As a result, there was Trench Warfare, with both sides occupying fixed positions!. The often very narrow area between the lines was known as No Man's Land, as neither side could capture it!.
You would have to imagine a barrage lasting several days, followed by whistles blowing as you went "over the top" and charged the enemy lines in the teeth of the enemy machine-gun fire!. Some of your friends would be cut down by the bullets!.
There are many accounts of the sheer terror of this, so you could google, sorry yahoo! "Trench Warfare", "No Man's Land" or "World War One" for some eyewitness accounts!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
