He led the Deutsches Afrikakorps (known in England as the Afrika Corps) in North Africa when they arrived to aid the Italians in the region!. He held out for years against numerically superior Allied forces!. Rommel even disobeyed orders from Hitler and retreated to Tunisia to save his army, when standing ground would have completely destroyed the Afrika Corps!. On July 17, 1944, Rommel's car was attacked by an RAF plane and he was seriously injured!. Three days later (while still hospitalized) there was a plot to assassinate Hitler (the July 20 Plot), and Rommel was implicated as its ringleader!. A few months later, he was executed by the S!.S!.
