Hey Dream-maker!.

This would make a great alternative history novel! I think you could make a compelling case for this scenario, especially if Germany had been able to convince Japan to hold off on Pearl Harbour until the Nazi's were ready to do a similar attack on the US shipyards and Navy Bases in the US East Coast!. Thank goodness that Hitler was surprised when the UK refused to ally with him, and went about on a foolish idea to try to capture the UK!.!.!.!

The idea that only reluctantly did the US start supplying the UK with food and military aid shows what a knife-edge world history stood on at that point, when British will to fight was at low ebb!. The combination of Churchill's determination with American passive help helped them hold out, in spite of America's isolationist policies that were abrogated only after the Japanese Attack on Pearl Harbour!.

The obvious air-supremacy of the Luftwaffe over the Russians was comical - russians rigidly in formation, just being picked off by the Messcherschmidts!Www@QuestionHome@Com

That is ridiculous!. For one, Ireland would have been taken too!.

Second, Hitler would have never made it to North America!. He also wasted so much of his Army against the Russians!.

The Japanese would not be of any use to the Germans as they were already beat back by the Americans, and were steadily retreating since Midway!. The Americans would have dropped the bombs on Japan, forced a surrender and produced more bombs the next year to drop on Hitler!.

Not having a place to land would not be an obstacle as the Americans would have just built more air craft carriers!. Not to mention they could just land in Northern Africa, which they had secured!.

The British expedited the war for the allies, but the war could have been won with just the Russians and the Americans!. I don't want to limit British contributions, as they were very important, it is just the fact that if the war needed won, the Americans were going to do it!. They were not a war torn country, there was no risk of invasion from the Germans, and the military age population of North America was vastly greater than what the Germans could muster!.

In short, Hitler would have been much more a nuisance than he was without Britain, but ultimately he was doomed to failure between the US and Soviet sandwich!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

no, it was militarily impossible for germany to invade the usa in the 1940's, even if it was not fighting russia and had dominated europe completely!. the distances involved are too great and america too strong!. the reality is that the usa could have defeated both germany and japan, would have taken longer, been harder, more people would have died, but apart from the possibility of the axis powers building an atomic bomb before the allies, they were always going to lose!.
to say that ireland could be used as a springboard for the invasion of the usa is ridiculous, its 3000 miles away, the us navy was hugely powerful and would have no problems destroying any invasion fleet!. the german navy paled in comparison and its industry just could not compete with the usa!.

[edit]- mate tbh i think the falklands example is irrelevant to this argument, totally different circumstances!. in 1982 the uk held a significant advantage in terms of naval resources, our submarines allowed us to frighten the argentine fleet into port by sinking the ara general belgrano!. by rights the argies should have won, but a few bombs failed to explode and they did not target our aircover!. in a total war situation (as with ww2) then an invading fleet would be crushed in the mid atlantic by a fleet as powerful as the us navy!. us conventional forces meant that they would always win a total war!. germany would never be able to adequately bring force to bear against the us!. perhaps the us would have been able to do little other than defend itself, but it would have done so more than adequately, and would most certainly not have been invaded by germany!.

[edit] i see your pont like, but the falklands is so different that i dont reckon the principle can be applied to a prospective trans-atlantic invasion!. sending a task force to kick the argies out of the falklands is very different to invading a continent sized nation, with a huge population, massive industrial capacity and the ability to defend its waters very effectively!.
im not convinced that mexico would be receptive to the idea of a german invasion through its territory!. as soon as it became obvious to the us that that was what was going to happen, they would kick the s*hit out of mexico!. the problem would still remain of transferring the millions of fighting men that would be needed to invade the usa across the atlantic!. the us navy would stop it happening without too much trouble, the kriegsmarine had nothing to counter it with!. the us submarine service was highly effective, they had aircraft carriers which the germans did not, and battleships which though almost obselete could still wreak havoc, particularly in the absence of german aircover!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

No!. I think that their dialect of English would probably have deviated even further from the original vernacular than it has anyway!. What would be far more interesting would be whether the Germans would then learn American English as a foreign tongue, or whether they would learn English English!.

There is also the interesting matter of the Commonwealth!. After the Treaty of Versailles, the UK !.!.!.well, protected the former German territories!. Presumably Germany would have returned the compliment and taken over many Commonwealth countries!. Would they have made them speak German!? I reckon so!Www@QuestionHome@Com

First Germany would have had to defeat England before attacking Russia!.
Second The U!.S!. would have maintained a policy of neutrality in the European war!. IE not supplying Russia with the tools of the trade!.
Third and most important Germany does not overextend it's military ability to Carry the war to the U!.S!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

No, not unless Hitler went to America too!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

No!. The Germans would all speak English as they would have been overcome by the superior British culture!. More tea, vicar!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

Great Britain and America are not the same place!.!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I fail to see how you derive at that conclusion !.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

no because american is known to be a different language as they use different phrases and spellingWww@QuestionHome@Com

Yes!.!.!.so much for appeasement! TaggerWww@QuestionHome@Com

Possibly, but the Germans would have made sure that they spoke German and not the bastardised English!.which they speak now!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

isnackon and a few other have got it slightly wrong!.

If Hitler had beaten Britain in 1939 or 1940, he could then have gone on to attack the USA in tandem with the Japanese!.

At this stage the Japanese had NOT been beaten back by the USA!.

In fact in 1939 the USA was not prepared for war, the USAF and Army were under equipped and poorly organised at that stage, and the US Navy would not have been able to take on both germany and japan!.

also, isnackon!.!.comments regarding North Africa, it was the British under Montgomery who secured North Africa NOT the USA, who actually fought poorly in n africa!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

this guy has done his reading and is correct about many facts, and detail!. However his basic premise is wrong, I believe!.

If Germany had knocked the UK out of WW2 in 1940, and the Japs had had a bit more luck at Pearl Harbour and MIdway, then the US would have probably not been interested in intervening in Europe!. However, by the mid- 1940's the US would have found intolerable the World situation, and threat to its interests by Germany and / or the Soviet Union and the Japs, and we'd have had nuclear weapons bouncing around Central Europe by 1945/6Www@QuestionHome@Com

We don't know whether Hitler would have tried to invade America if he had been victorious in Britain, but he was capable of anything!. He might have been crazy enough to try it!. However, even if he had succeeded in beating Britain, it seems unlikey in the extreme that he would have been able to beat Russia, and I don't see how he could have turned his energies to fighting America while he was still occupied on the russian front!.

and then what would be have done, sent fleets of battleships across the Atlantic!? Would he have had enough to take on America!? Is it likely he would ever have succeeded!?Www@QuestionHome@Com
