I think it is amazing that you asked this question and I came across it just as I was finishing reading Leon Trotsky's autobiography!.
The Thermidor Reaction refers to the reaction that was inspired against the French Revolution at the end of the 18th century!. Robespierre had been killed and Napoleon began to take control of France and eventually became emperor!. Trotsky uses the phrase to describe the same reaction to the October Revolution!. The excitement of change was over and certain elements began to emerge that stressed opportunism instead of continuing along the path that the Revolution had created!. I guess economics just isn't as exciting as the immediate revolution!. In the Soviet's case, Stalin plays the part of Napoleon, betraying the Revolution and actually attacking what the Revolution stood for!.

This is bound to occur in many revolutions because many people either want quick fixes to their problems, which does not happen, hence the reactionary attitudes, or people, like Stalin, use the instability caused by revolution to push their own agenda!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
