Question: If Napoleon knew what to expect at Waterloo, what would happen!?
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Waterloo should have been an easy French victory !. It turned out to be a case of anything that can go wrong did go wrong !. If Napoleon knew what to expect he would have ordered his left flank to ignore the farm house and advance and capture the road !. That would have cut off the British from the Prussians !. Then he would have ordered his right flank to move around the British flank and attack the British reserves instead !. Then he should have ordered his front line troops to attack the bend in the British line and not the British artillery !. He Would then have his reserves attack the British artillery !. The results would have been The British line divided into 3 and all British reserve eliminated and no Prussians on the field !.

I have played the Waterloo war game many times as the French and have never lost !. The French did everything wrong that day and anyone that has studied the battle should know that the real advantages were on the French side !. More men , more cannon , mor Calvary , better supplied , and more experienced leaders !.

But Wellington wasn't sick and Napoleon was !. He was to sick to give the orders that needed to be given !. To sick to pay attention to the battle and no one else would give those orders for him !.Www@QuestionHome@Com

At quatre bras, the final battle of the waterloo campaign Napoleon
was expecting the coalition army to fall back again!. He had sent
1/3 of his army under Marshall Grouchy to pursue the Prussians
and keep them from joining with the Brittish!. He was convinced
they would not make a stand until they were joined!. He kept his
guard corps with him and sent Marshall Ney to pursue the Brittish
He would use his guard as the coupdegras were ever they were
needed!. Grouchy failed to prevent the Prussians from linking up
with the Brittish but also managed not to show up for the final
battle!. The Brittish defense at quatre bras was nothing short of
incredible, when napoleon showed up with the guard it was to
late!. In any way you may question the events it is indisputable
that the Brittish soundly whipped Napoleon!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

what could happen which never did!? Napoleon would still have been defeated! The British would have joined with the Prussians who arrived late in the battle and their combined forces would of defeated him, at Waterloo or somewhere else!.
In terms of the tactics of the battle there is perhaps little he could of done, the British infantry was far superior to his own! faced against his infantry they fired maybe 4 or 5 shots to their 2, and against their cavalry they formed squares which repelled them!. Napoleon could perhaps of delayed his advance and destroyed the British squares with sustained artillery, but that would take time, and with the Prussians coming he didn't have time!.
Though in truth he probably did know what to expect, he had been fighting the British for two decades, their tactics never changed, he knew Wellington favoured defensive tactics, as he had done all through the napolionic wars and as he did at Waterloo! Once more he knew the Prussians were on their way, which is why he threw his army at the British squares in an attempt to break them before the Prussians arrived because he knew as soon as they arrived unless the British were defeated then he would be!.
In short Napoleon was a master tactician, he knew he couldn't allow the two forces to meet and at Waterloo he took the last chance to try and stop that, a modern commander may favor withdrawal and waging some kind of gorilla campaign, but that wasn't the way Napoleon or colonial armies fought!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

If he was smart he would of sent out scouts to find Blücher's Austrian army who was left after skirmishes in disarray trying back into the fray and far from the British and the French army as a whole should of wiped them out!. Then gone back to France, to regroup, resupply, and reinforce!. This way the British who were under staffed, lacked proper clothing for the weather and supplies, would have suffered greatly waiting for Napoleon to show, then when the British army was on it's last legs before moving on, he could of attacked on won!. This way with no Austrian army creeping up on his rear!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

He would have left this field and looked for another place to fight with better terrain, where he could do what he always did!. Take control of all aspects of the battle and win!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

He would have made a better effort to destroy the Prussians after defeating them!. As it was they rallied after their defeat and went to Wellington's aid!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
