The Boyars did not like Peter because he made them change to conform to Western European styles of dress and appearance (shaving the beards)!. He was a strong Czar, and the nobles are never happy about that - - it diminishes their power and influence!.

The serfs probably felt Peter was a hard taskmaster!. He had them doing heavy labor building huge projects including a Russian navy from scratch and the city of St!. Petersburg from nothing!.

Catherine was German - - unrelated to Peter, but she would have appreciated Peter's absolute authority!. She was herself a self made absolute ruler - perhaps a bit more "enlightened" than even the progressive minded Peter!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
