Question: Which centuries could be classified as medieval!?
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
From the fall of Rome (ca!. 476 CE) to the beginning of the Renaissance (ca!. 1550 CE) is the period we call the Middle Ages or the medieval era!. The "Dark Ages" are the beginning part to about the Norman Conquest of Britain (or 476 CE to 1066 CE), and the "High Middle Ages" are the last century or so (say, 1400 to 1550 CE)!.

So in direct answer to your question, the fifth through the sixteenth centuries are "classified as medieval!."Www@QuestionHome@Com

The inclusion in "medieval" of the period 5th to early 11th centuries is a very modern and arbitrary one without any basis in fact!. In Sweden, the medieval period is classed as 1050 to 1538, with the "Viking Period" treated as completely separate!. If it's good enough for Sweden, it ought to be good enough for England!.

Further, no term has any meaning at all unless a set of criteria can be attached to it!. For me, "medieval" must include all of the following criteria, all at the same time:

* castle building (in England from around 1050 and ended around 1500)
* the monastic system (ended in England around 1538)
* knights on horseback in battle (began 1066)
* the use of massed archery in battle (ended around the same time as castle building and the Dissolution of the monasteries)!.

So using these strict criteria, the medieval period can be defined as covering the late 11th to the early 16th centuries, with the Saxon/Viking period immediately preceding it!. Let those who want to include the 5th century onwards give a similar list of criteria to support their view !. !. !.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Well the period from the fall of Rome in 476AD to around 800 - 900AD is usually classed as the DARK AGES!.

The MEDIEVAL era(including the Crusades and Elizabethan era) begins in around 900 to 1000AD and carries on until the RENAISSANCE era which starts in the mid to late 1500's AD!.

The RENAISSANCE era is then replaced by the MODERN era, this starts in around 1750AD with the Industrial revolution, and includes the VICTORIAN age within it!.

Chronologically you have the ANCIENT WORLD (Sumeria, Assyria, Babylonia, Egypt, Hittites, Persia etc) starting in around 3300BC and carrying on until around 340BC!.

From 340 BC you have the CLASSICAL ERA, really starting with Alexander the greats conquests, with Greece, Rome dominant, this lasts until the fall of rome as i first mentioned!.

Hope this all helps and puts things in perspective!.

PS NICE TO SEE 3 PEOPLE VOTED MINE AS A BAD ANSWER, From the point of history in Western Europe, it is accurate!. also from the point of World History, it is generally accurate too!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

In British archaeology we roughly follow
410 AD to 1000 AD = Early Medieval
1000 AD to 1500 AD = Medieval
1500 AD to 1900 AD = Post Medieval

The 'medieval' period however is slightly different in different countries, just like the Iron Age whic ran for much longer in Scandinavia than he rest of Europe for example!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
