I had to double check to make sure I had this correct!. (I was in high school and didn't always pay attention to world events), Reagan went and visited Germany in June of 1987!. (At this time the Soviet Union still existed-it wasn't dissolved into separate nations until 1991) He gave a famous speech asking that the wall be torn down!. Gorbachev was ruler of the Soviet Union which at that time controlled East Germany!. This was one of the main reasons why the Berlin Wall came down 2 years later!. Russia withdrew its armies from other Communist countries because they could no longer support them!. So many of the countries then chose a different style of government!. Hungary opened its borders and so East Germans were fleeing across them and then into West Germany!. The East German government capitulated and opened its borders!. People began climbing over the Berlin wall and then began to dismantle it, first by hand and then with machinery so in one sense the German people tore down the wall themselves!. But it was East Germany's fear of further depressing its economy that actually tore it down!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Both Reagan and Gorbachev had a great deal to do with the Wall coming down!. They did not personally do the physical labor!.
Reagan's speech in which he states: "Mr!. Gorbachev, tear down this Wall" is incredibly moving and was part of the downfall of the Soviet Union and the tearing down of the Wall!. It's all intertwined!.

No, Reagan wasn't involved!. Neither was Gorbachev for that matter!. The wall was torn down when East Germany opened up its borders for refugees going into West Berlin from Eastern Europe!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Gorbachev was in Russia!. Berlin Wall was in Berlin, Germany!. Reagan was President of US!. Reagan could make recommendations, but he could not force them to take the wall down!. It was removed when Germany was united and there was not more need for it!. Gorbachev didn't have anything to do with it either!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
