To start America was still at war against japan and the estimates of the manpower needed to invade made further fighting in Europe impossible !. By the time japan surrendered American forces in Europe were out numbered by soviet forces !. By the start of the Korean war both America and the Russians had atomic weapons so an invasion was impossible without total nuclear war and the end of civilization !.Www@QuestionHome@Com

To invade Eastern Europe during the Cold War would have been to attack allies of the Soviet Union, and to start a nuclear war!.

also, the only countries that the U!.S!. ever destroyed (not single-handedly, as part of the Allied Powers) were Nazi Germany and the Empire of Japan, and that was under the conditions of a devastating total war the likes of which had never been seen before, and (hopefully) may never be seen again!. Additionally, with the invention of nuclear weapons, to wage such a war would be to end civilization as we know it!.

Why would the United States, or any nation, have been foolish enough to willingly instigate World War III!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

The pre-cold war president (Roosevelt) didn't set anything up to fight the communists because he was a socialist himself!. The first cold war president didn't have the spine to fight the communists except in small wars like Korea, and he didn't even really want to do that!. By the time a Man got into the whitehouse (Eisenhower), there were enough left-wing congressmen to derail any attempt to fight world communism!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

US=bully that can only handle small kiddy states like its doing now!. It got owned in the Korean war along with the UN!. China+Russia/USSR=Basically unbeatable in any conventional war in the past and currently!. Both of these guys supported North Korea!. They wanted a buffer zone and the commies eventually got what they wanted!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

1!. The Allies reached agreement on how to divide up the world at Potsdam!. For instance, we decided that the French got Indochina back even though the Vietnamese had suffered greatly under the Japanese fighting their rule and had developed a very competent resistance movement!. Well, while we didn't believe that the Russians would rule Eastern Europe the way that they did, we basically agreed to their occupation of those countries!.

2!. Umm!.!.!.we did try to destroy N!. Korea (by going all the way to the Yalu River)!. And we got our butts handed to us!.

3!. The US also engaged in a series of covert actions to grow resistance movements in many Eastern Bloc countries and almost all of them failed!.

4!. This idea that we were all powerful and could have taken out those countries if we'd wanted to!.!.!.what hoey! Until the 80's, the consensus among the US military was that the only way we'd stop a Soviet attack in Europe was through the use of Nukes--we couldn't match up with them conventionally!. But we're supposed to go on the attack and liberate Poland, Romania, etc!.!?

The Korean War eventually became very unpopular with the American public!. It had nothing to do with anti-war movement!. The North Koreans clearly attacked, they were the bad guys!. But ultimately our people were never more than intellectually engaged in that war and grew tired of it!. After the sacrifice of WW-2, it was hard to tell people to send their sons to fight and die in, say, Albania!.

Use nukes you say!? The Russians and then the Chinese acquired them soon too!. And it's real hard to say that we're going to use tactical nukes in East Germany against Warsaw Pact armored forces but we want to "free" that ground and people--can't use nukes on the field you are trying to "save!."

It was called the "Cold War" because it mostly never got "hot" (ie: not direct conflict between US and Russian troops which could have escalated and gone nuclear)!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I don't know what hstory books u are reading but the USA has never destroyed any enemies anywhere!. They removed the British and Mexicans from what they considered US soil, but both Britian and Mexico still exist!.

thery certinally would not go and make the same mistakes as Hitler had just done, for goodness sake you don't attack Russia or China they are just too big!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
