Simple - the 49ers were men who flocked to california during the gold rush of 1849!. Many made a fortune in gold, many got shot, many died in accidents, and many more made a fortune as buisnessmen in california catering to the others, and ended up with the gold the others mined!. Most spoke english as they were usually from the United States, but there were any number of languages such as any immigrant rich area as people came looking for wealth!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The forty niners were people who came to california from all over the country!. They came to California because in 1848 James Marshall discovered gold at John Sutters sawmill in Sacramento!. They were ordinary people lured by the oppertunity to get rich by working a mine claim in the Sierra Nevada foothills !.Www@QuestionHome@Com
