schlieffen plan was where the germans wanted to attack france via belgium/netherlands!. it was changed at last min by general von moltke so they didn't go through netherlandsWww@QuestionHome@Com

The Schlieffen plan named after German General Alfred Von Schlieffen who designed it!. The original idea was to knock France out early in any future war!. At the time when the plan was formulated France was allied with Russia!. The basic idea was to place the massed German armies on the western front and attack France through Belgium!. also part of the plan was to leave a minimal force on the eastern front holding back any Russian attack and leaving virtually the full force of the German army to defeat France!. Once France had been defeated the Germans could then move their forces to the Eastern front!.
On the 1st August 1914 the German Kaiser ordered General Moltke to implemented the Schlieffen plan!. Unfortunately for Germany, General Molke changed the plan and moved more troops away from the western front and placed them on the eastern front facing Russia!. This obviously led to a weakened German Army!. In order to attack France, the German army needed to attack through Belgium and so on the 3rd August 1914 the German Government requested that their army be allowed to travel through Belgium!. On the 4th of August Belgium refused and so Germany declared war on Belgium!. Britian was allied to Belgium and so in turn declared war on Germany!.
The Belgians fought really well, but their tiny army was no match for the German army which was probably the best trained and well equiped army in the world at the time!.
Eventually a term came into being 'Brave Little Belgium' which represented how this little country stood up to Germany!.

The Schlieffen plan failed due to not having enough troops to deliver a knock out blow to France!. French and British forces managed to hold back the Germans from taking Paris and so began the 4 year stalemate of trench warfare which cost the lives of so many poor young men throughout Europe and elsewhere!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The German invasion of Belgium was a big deal to Britain because Belgium was neutral (aka a buffer zone)!. I think there was an agreement Britain made about invading Germany if they went through Belgium!.

The Germans went through Belgium so they could get to France and carry out the Schlieffen Plan (the other answerers have done a good job explaining this)!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The Schlieffen plan was the the German plan to knock out France and the UK first and then Russia which was foiled by Russian mobilisation being quicker than anticipated!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
