He was an american general and then the 18th president of the U!.S!. In 1868, Grant was elected president as a Republican!. Grant was the first president to serve for two full terms since Andrew Jackson forty years before!. Presidential experts typically rank Grant in the lowest quartile of U!.S!. presidents, primarily for his tolerance of corruption!. In recent years, however, his reputation as president has improved somewhat among scholars impressed by his support for civil rights for African Americans!. Unsuccessful in winning a third term in 1880, bankrupted by bad investments, and terminally ill with throat cancer!.

On August 22, 1848, Grant married Julia Boggs Dent (1826–1902), the daughter of a slave owner!. They had four children: Frederick Dent Grant, Ulysses S!. Grant, Jr!. (Buck), Ellen Wrenshall Grant (Nellie), and Jesse Root Grant!.

After the end of his second term in the White House, Grant spent over two years traveling the world with his wife!. He visited Ireland, Scotland, and England; the crowds were huge!. The Grants dined with Queen Victoria at Windsor Castle and with Prince Bismarck in Germany!. They also visited Russia, Egypt, the Holy Land, Siam(Thailand), and Burma!. In Japan, they were cordially received by Emperor Meiji and Empress Shōken at the Imperial Palace!. Today in the Shibakoen section of Tokyo, a tree still stands that Grant planted during his stay!.

Ulysses S!. Grant died of throat cancer at 8:06 a!.m!. on Thursday, July 23, 1885, at the age of 63 in Mount McGregor, Saratoga County, New York!. His last word was a request, "Water!." He was nobler than some people give him credit for!. When Lee surrendered he said that the officers could keep their sidearms, that officers and enlisted both could keep their horses, and he told them the US wouldn't bother them!.

A year or two later there was talk of charging Lee and some of his officers with treason, since, after all, they had tried to overthrow the government by force!. Lee went to Washington DC, said "I thought you said you weren't going to bother us!." Grant said "I did!." That ended that!.

He wasn't much of a strategic genius!. He just realized that if he lost 10,000 men and Lee lost 7,500, the Federals would win the battle because the USA had twice as many men as the CSA!. Tough on those 10,000 men and boys, but Grant kept slugging away and finally wore down the Confederates!.

He trusted his acquaintances more than he should have; his presidency was riddled with corruption!.

He stopped drinking and started smoking more; throat cancer killed him!.
