WWII submarines, both German and American were not pleasant places to live!. They were at sea for months at a time and often had to stay submerged for days, breathing through a special line called a snorkel!.

While a submarine could move quite fast on the surface, once under, it was comparatively slow!. Submerged, the submarine was the slowest of all combat vessels!.!.!. unless you count row boats!.

American submarines were called "pig boats" by their crews!. This was because, they literally stank by the time
they returned to port from their first mission!. The odor could neither be eliminated nor masked effectively!.

The press called submariners the "silent service" for two reasons!. First, submarines attacked from under water, quietly!. But the submariners were aware that information was vital to the enemy!. They simply did not talk to reporters about anything, not their tactics, their equipment, even their families!.

Torpedos weighed over 3,000 pounds and were mostly propelled by Navol, a high density hydrogen peroxide material which provided oxygen to burn the actual fuel, alcohol!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Look up the USS Wahoo!. It was a Gato-class sub in WW II that had a very high "kill" ratio (sorry, that's the term) in the Sea of Japan and surrounding areas before it was sunk in the area of the sea between Japan and the Sakhalin Islands!. It was recently found (by Russian divers), and there was a formal burial at sea on the site, and at the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum at Pearl Harbor!. My great-uncle was one of the officers--he died at age 23!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Tiger Boy gave you a pretty good answer!. If you are interested in watching an amazing movie about submarine warfare I suggest that you rent "Das Boot" (The Boat) It's a picture about a German U-Boat during WW2!. One of the finest war movies ever made and apparently very true in it's detail of life and war aboard a submarine!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
