Inventor: Eli Whitney Invention: The Cotton Gin Fact One: Eli Whitney was born 1765 and died 1825 Fact Two: The cotton gin was a key invention of the industrial revolution in America!. Fact Three: Whitney got the idea for a cotton gin by watching a wild cat kill a chicken and then try and pull it's prey through a fence!. The chicken went through, but the feathers stayed behind - hence, the idea of the cotton gin pulling the cotton from the pod!. Fact Four: Whitney achieved his patent for the cotton gin (#X72) on March 14, 1794!. Fact Five: Whitney's later discovery/invention of interchangeable mechanical peices led to mass production of arms (rifles specifically)!. Fact Six: Whitney died of prostate cancer in 1825!. Fact Seven: While remarkably popular, Whitney's cotton gin couldn't be produced fast enough and others began to infringe on his patent and produce knockoffs!. Committed to his invention and his brand, Whitney ran the cotton gin business into bankruptcy by 1797 fighting patent infringement lawsuits!.
