Question: How would you rate the fighting capability of the American, German and Russian troops during WW2!?
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Germans - highly trained, well equipped and excellent fighters!.
Soviets (remember not all the troops were Russians) - initially, rubbish, but at Leningrad, Moscow and Stalingrad became hardened, they became excellent fighters, reasonably equipped however they were reliant on numbers to take positions!.
Americans, well equipped, fought well on D-day and in the Ardennes, reasonably well in Italy and initially poorly in North Africa!. Fought well in Pacific campaigns/
British - initially poor, but in North Africa earned a deserved reputation for steeliness!. Fought well in Burma, France and en route to the Elbe!.
Apologies to Commonwealth countries & other Allies for not mentioningWww@QuestionHome@Com

The objective measure is in the results; Americans, British and Commonwealth troops, and Russians won!. That's who stood on the battlefield when it ended!.

Three aspects of each military must be measured: Training, Equipment and use, and strategy/tactics!. Until late in the war, the German infantry was better trained, made most effective use of equipment, and was better led!. It relied on initiative and flexibility in combat!.

In material terms, the Americans had more than anyone, and enough all around good equipment to match up well against every foe!. It relied more on fire power and air power than the others!. At war's end, its officer corps was excellent, but at the start, it was average to poor until the peace time brass was moved aside!.

The Germans had two great strengths, their panzer forces and blitzkrieg, and small unit tactics, especially in defense!.

Russians had massive artillery and equally massive infantry with no limit on the casualties it would take!.

The Americans had the most superior logistical and strategic planning capacities, together with a combined arms approach using innovative command, control, and communications!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It varied throughout the war!. German has been relatively high throughout the war but declined someone towards the end as they lost many of their best troops!. Russians started out very badly because many of their officers were inexperienced, and much of their equipment outdated!. Towards the end of the war they improved significantly!. Americans were well trained and fairly well equipped but their low tolerance for casualties relative to other armies limited what they could accomplish!.

I'd say German troops were most effective!. Then probably American but it is really debatable!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

British: Good soldiers for obeying orders and because of their officers made a good show!. They died well when ordered to do so but individually had little or no initiative!. This wasn't due to the individual, but the system they trained under!.

Russian: Just give a bunch of people each a weapon and send them in a direction!. If you have enough to sacrifice, you will win!. The Soviets kept this policy throughout their existence as a country!.

The Americans, once they learned the way of warfare in WWII made the best showing!. The individual had some say in the action and individual initiative was used many times!. You could also (to a point at least) question an order and even a private might be listened to by an officer if he had an idea!. This didn't exist in most of the British military, but did in the Australian!.

I think that if the Australians had the population of the U!.S!., that they would have made such a "splash" in the war that the world would still be talking of it!. They were very much like a cross taking the best of the British and American traits!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Misha has some good points!. In the middle of the war, the Germans had a very high opinion of the Red infantry's defensive capabilities!.
Towards the end of the war, the top US troops were as good as anybody's!. There's really no comparing US infantry to other contries', though, because they were used doctrinally in a different manner!. The US put an exceptionally heavy emphasis on artillery and close tactical air support controlled at lower tactical levels than any other army, and still does!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

german troops were only 2nd to the british in ability, the russians were very brave but because of their massive amount of soldiers they had it over the germans, some americans were ok but compared to the british ,australian, canadians they were very ordinary,Www@QuestionHome@Com
