Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Well, from the 19th century they were called nannies, but in the 18th century I think they were just known as nurse!. I seem to remember that in Jane Austen there are occasional references to 'nurse' rather than nanny!. I think 'nanny' probably came to be the usual term later in the 19th century, perhaps about the time of Queen Victoria!. A governess (suggested by a comment above) was really a teacher, usually of girls and sometimes younger boys!.Www@QuestionHome@Com A governess!? They were like caretakers of the children!.Www@QuestionHome@Com I would guess you're talking about nannies!?Www@QuestionHome@Com |
