Q1!.
The Oldest Road in Britain

c!.800BCE at least: The Icknield Way, Britain’s oldest road!.

The Icknield Way is unique among long distance tracks because it can claim to be “the oldest road in Britain”!. Extending from Ivinghoe Beacon in Buckinghamshire to Knettishall Heath in Norfolk, it consists of prehistoric pathways, ancient when the Romans came!. Dotted with archaeological remains, it survives as splendid tracks and green lanes along the chalk “spine” of England!. The Icknield Way Association looks after the interests of the route as a whole, monitoring any actions that may threaten its integrity and urging improvements to the route for walkers!.

Q2!. Re tarmac!.
Shortened form of tarmacadam, tar + macadam (crushed stones)!.

Good luck xWww@QuestionHome@Com

The Ridgeway, Avebury to Aylesbury, and the Sweet Track in the Somerset Levels compete for the oldest road at about 6,000 years old!. Other old roads and tracks exist but it is difficult to date them except by dropped personal items or dendrochronology on any wood used!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

the ridgeway is claimed to be britains oldest road, dating back from 20 000 BC!

i know that the person who invented tarmac was called John Loudon McAdam, and tarmac is a short way of saying Tarmacadam, so it probably ame from his name!.

happy to help + c u some time!

Re 2) in your question : !. !. !. !.

The word 'tarmac' comes from the Scottish guy who invented/discovered it - his name was Macadam (think that's the spelling or McAdam) - 'tarmac' is a mix of tar and small stones = tar Macadam = tarmac!.

Re 1) in your question : !. !. !. !.

Not sure exactly what your question is asking!.

The oldest surviving roads of Britain are the Bronze Age roads, one of which is at Woodhenge on Salisbury Plain!.

The next and best surviving ancient roads of Britain are the Roman roads!.
