It was the Spanish explorer, Hernando DeSoto who landed at the mouth of the manitee river and then trekked around the gulf coast heading for the Spanish missions in northern mexico!.

The OLDEST European colony in America, San Gabriel, was established in Georgia and they spent a year before moving on west, but they didn't explore far north in the countryside!.!.!. they WERE the first to reach what is now Mississippi!.

The Explorer who discovered the Mississippi River was a Frenchman, Pierre LaSalle and he also explored the gulf coast of Texas and Louisiana!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The state of Mississippi didn't exist when the early explorers were wandering around!. And their geographical descriptions were often so vague it is hard to figure out exactly where they were!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
