Question: What was the precise occasion on which queen Victoria said "We are not amused"!?
I heard somewhere that it was when she was going to be married to the then unpopular German Prince Albert, and in the procession one of the attendants pointed out to another a decoration which featured a German sausage and a petticoat!. Is this true, and if not, what was it that failed to amuse her!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

"We are not amused"!.
This quotation is attributed to Victoria, with varying stories!. One has her saying it after viewing a production of Gilbert and Sullivan's "HMS Pinafore"!. Other stories describe it as a reaction to a groom-in-waiting of hers, the Hon!. Alexander Grantham Yorke, either to a theatrical production he put on, or to a risqueé joke he told to a German guest and which the Queen asked him to repeat after the guest laughed loudly!. In this account, she was not using the royal "we" but speaking for the affronted ladies of the court!.

(Besides this instance, I read she often said it when something happened that literally did not amuse her, but yet everyone around her thought the action had been funny!.)Www@QuestionHome@Com

According to one of her granddaughters, or possibly great-granddaughters, who was interviewed on television as a very old lady, Queen Victoria denied having said it at all!

In his book 'Queen Victoria Was Amused' Alan hardy gives as his explanation that she said it after someone had told a risque joke (but only because there were young unmarried girls present, the Queen quite enjoyed 'broad' humour herself)!.

However, perhaps Alan Hardy had never seen the TV interview with the Queen's granddaughter, because she was quite positive that her grandmother had told her she never said it!. I wish I could remember her name, but I can't!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Not the real historical answer (for which I apologise) but in a more up-to-date environment I would have said that she'd just watched the whole series of "The Office" with R!.Gervais!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
