But why did you say Pearl Harbor!? Basically Mcarthur was semi retired from the Army when WWII started!. He was not popular because of the way he handled the WWI veterans bonus march in DC!. He was in charge of both the Philippine military and ours there when the war started!. FDR ordered him evacuated to Australia before the islands fell!. That is where the speech with the phrase I shall return originated!. He did!. The Philippines were basically liberated in 1944!. But fighting continued until the end of the war!. The Solomons were mainly a marine operation with Army help!. Admiral Halsey commanded that area!. Hawaii was never occupied just the Pearl Harbor attack!.
