Question: Leonardo Da Vinci help!?

I have to do this paper on Leonardo Da Vinci, and there's a few questions I have to answer!. I've found all the answers except for one, even though I've googled it I can't find the answer to this question, which is 'Why did Leonardo Da Vinci design the sorts of machines that he did!?'
