My understanding is that Crazy Horse led the main assaults on the 7th Cavalry that prevented them from withdrawing in order while Gall led forces through a ravine or cut that allowed the Lakota and Cheyenne to get to the high ground and so gain enfilading fire on the retreating troopers. As a result, the 7th Cavalry lost all semblance of order. They died by troop (or in some cases individually) rather than in the stereotypical picture of the entire 7th cavalry in a circle surrounded by Indians.

Custer's boys were probably doomed anyway. They were outnumbered and outgunned (the Indians had a lot better weapons like Henry repeaters and too many of the Sharp's carbines were jamming as evidenced by cartridges found on the battlefield). But with Crazy Horse pressing them and denying an orderly withdrawal, that allowed Gall to tactically outmanuever them.
