Position:Home>History> What was the military like in rome back in cearers time?

Question:Cearers? Do you mean Caesar, as in Julius and his nephew Augustus Caesar? If so, then you can look up the info in Wikipedia. Just search on "Roman Military"; there's quite a few choices. Here's one:

The Roman military was very well organised and therefore very effective. Many methods and practices are still in use today. For instance, a centurian was in charge of 100 men, (century=100). The Romans also took what they considered to be the 'best parts' of the armies they conquered and introduced them into their own armies practices. In short, they were a formidable fighting machine !

The Ancient Roman military was a quickly-raised fighting force organized into 5200 man legions that were always loyal to their commander (this is why many commanders, such as Caesar, were able to defy the state and/or invade Rome). About half of Rome's expenditures were for military purposes. They were raised quickly and had a nearly unlimited supply of soldiers, so even after defeat after defeat after defeat, they would wear the opponent down and win. After conquering new lands, the veterans would settle there as a peacekeeping, able-fighting force - this is why expansion was so successful in holding territory. Caesar held the army well, but later emperors destroyed it by under-equipping it and making it an army of the poor, so it lost power later.
