the germans, during the 14th century , felt that the thrill and challenge of deuling could be carried on without the bloodletting. as a result, they began the movement to develope fencing as a sport. they devised blunted practice weapons with which to duel each other, and were the first to utilize an offical to supervise the contests. the officials would observe the men in a dueling situation for an allotted period of time, at he end of which he would declare the champion. the contest was the concidered closed. fencing as practiced by the germans was not redily adopted by other countries in which dueling still prevailed. but soon, many monarchs had become distraught over the great number of courtiers being eliminated in duels. so they forbid it.

the germans, in the 14th century, liked the thrill of a duel but sometimes some of their best men were killed in the process. So the germans came up with the idea of adding a blunted end to the sword, so that nobody got hurt. The thrill and enjoyment of dueling continued and no deaths were made of it. They used an official to decide who won the battle at the end. Most other european countries didn't adopt this new type of duel, but after many Monarchs (kings/queens) noticed the number of deaths of their courtiers (men or women who would join the monarchs in the court), and thus banned duels to the death and adopted the ideas of the germans.

During the 14th century German nobility developed fencing as a practical alternative to duelling as a means of preventing unnecessary bloodletting or death. The contests used blunted weapons, were observed by independent officials and had set times. At the conclusion of the contest a winner was declared and the original dispute was resolved. Fencing was slow to be adopted by other countries until several monarchs banned duelling.
