Position:Home>History> Where the ancient Greeks lighter than modern Greeks?

Question:Often you will see paintings of the ancient Greeks and their hair and skin color is much lighter than most modern day Greeks. Were there more lighter toned Greeks back then?
Why did it change?

I hope this doesn't come across as racist in any way, its merely a historical inquiry.

Well, I am Greek and I have studied a lot about ancient Greek culture. I totally disagree with you about the colors, if you see the paintings of the attic red figured and black figured vases, and also the pottery of other areas including Corinth, Macedonia region (Thessaloniki etc), you will conclude exactly the opposite!
Of course no one can have an objective mind, we don't really know anything about this matter, but you will see that they were mostly black haired with white skin.
Bear also in mind, that Dorian race, which was spread in Sparta, Epirus and Macedonia, where basically blond haired with light colored eyes.

Google search in icons: red figured vases, black figured vases, painting Macedonia.
