Position:Home>History> Was the Russian Revolution in 1917 a good thing or a bad thing?

Question:Well, it overturned a bad thing only to install something that was worse.

This was also true of the French Revolution, which led to a lot of its participants to kill one another off until Napoleon took over the country, stabilized it, and started imperial wars in the rest of continental Europe until he was finally defeated.

Most frequently, all revolutions are able to do is defeat one set of bastards so that another set of bastards can come into power.

It turned out to be an unmitigated disaster. The perceived threat of Communism, Russian-style, was a major asset to Hitler in his rise to power, and resulted in World War II -- as well as in the slaughter of millions of Russians by Stalin.

bad - as it meant that the russians pulled out of the first world war, meaning that a large amount of germans travelled from the eastern front and went to meet the french and british soldiers in rhineland.
Good - As the monarch system in Russia ceased, meaning more power was in the people rather than an over glorified family, meaning things were better for the citizens of Russia

It sure changed the course of 20th century history, for better or for worse, didn't it!?

after the Bolshevik Revolution, Russia pulled out of the war(WWI) and freed many german pov's which meant that there were less Allies(russia was an allie) fighting germany and more germans fighting the Allies. Eventually, the Bolshevik Rev paved the way for Stalin to take over Russia, who actually killed and incarcerated more people in Gulag camps than Hitler himself. The reason that not many have made such a huge deal about Stalin is that he was an allie during WWII.

A Terrible thing, it prolonged WWI, helped people like Lenin and Stalin take power in USSR who murdered Millions of innocent Russians. it also helped in the rise of Hitler in Germany, not to mention the "new" Russia was our foe in the cold war for almost half a century after WWII.

the only good that came out of it was that it showed how Socialism/Communism will never work in the real world.

Good. It created the Soviet Union. Everyone was happy. The end.
