Position:Home>History> Please tell me what you think of these Republican Presidents?

Question:1. Eisenhower
2. Nixon
3. Ford
4. Reagan

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: 1. Eisenhower
2. Nixon
3. Ford
4. Reagan

Ike - A man with impressive qualities, habitually underrated. His overall record as a General and President are excelllent. He deserves more credit than he usually gets especially for moving forward on civil rights, but also gets negative marks for his weak response to McCartyism.

Nixon - Brilliant but disturbed. His presidency actually had some major accomplishments which were overshadowed by his crimes. He somehow managed throughout his life to see himself as a victim, even after he became only the second person (after FDR) to run on the national ticket of a major party 5 times. A fascinating psychological study.

Ford - Not a great President, but pretty much what the country needed after Nixon self-destructed.

Reagan - Mediocre (or worse) and over-rated. The major accomplishments claimed for him are phony. He didn't win the Cold War - the evil empire rotted from the inside and was already falling apart when he took office. He didn't reduce the size of government, which grew during his administration. He did put through a major tax cut, but also passed several tax increases, including by far the largest tax hit on the middle class in history. He was a precursor who paved the way for GW Bush, who is solidly the worst President in history.

All were fantastic leaders.

1. A hero of WWII, expierience in leadership. Had a good Presidency.

2. Called a devil, yet pulled out of Vietnam but rarely recieves credit for it. Interesting individual.

3. Interesting guy that was the US's only "king."

4. One of the better Presidents we have had.

Eisenhower was a good President

Nixon was a terrible President who kept the Vietnam War going for many years after he was elected to end it (he claimed to have a secret plan). 20,000 men died for nothing.

Ford was a lackluster President, he was OK but pardoned Nixon.

Reagan was a terrible President who doubled the National Debt, created Osama Bin Laden, Iran Contra, etc.

1. Good leader, doesn't get enough credit on his civil rights legislation (struck down by a democratic congress, then passed by a republican congress a few years later when Ike was out of office.) presided over the late 50's America.

2. Rightfully gets a bad rap for something (Watergate), but hardly ever gets credit for the good stuff like opening china to the west. I view him as Clinton without the good looks or charisma.

3. Poor Jerry, never cut out for the job, he ended up there purely as a quirk of history. only president never elected in any form. Made a bad situation worse, only Carter is a worse 20th century president.

4. A giant, understood the office was about big gestures and rhetorical, lifted the nation spirit at the end of a dark time. Scared the crap out the ruskies.

Eisenhower was a great President, The Cold War was really all he had to worry about and that hadn't really developed into a major problem yet. The after war economy was booming and he was able to come up with and spend a lot of time on programs because the Country was running smoothly. give him a 7...... because he had it easy.

Nixon- Got us out of Vietnam and was a pretty good President the first term, lots of progress made during that time. Second term was a little more.......not so good? lol. give him a 5

Ford- Really had nothing to do except try and fix Nixon's mess. Give him a 4 because mainly he was thrust into a job I am sure he didn't really want.

Reagan- Probably the best Rep President since Eisenhower. He made my life a lot better in the 80's coming out of the Jimmy Carter mess. Give him a 9.

1. good military leader
2. did a good job in getting us out of Vietnam.
3. a 33rd Degree Master Mason and my sister played with his wife when they were youngsters.
4. A better President than many realize.

Eisenhower only got elected because of he was a war hero
Nixon embarrassed the nation by lying and cheating and trying to cover it all up so that he could get re-elected
Ford pardoned Nixon in stead of letting him face the judicial system like all other criminals
Reagan made us a debtor nation....one of the interesting facts is that when he was elected one of the first things he did was CUT THE FUNDING for Alzheimers disease...but everything usually comes back to bite you
