i suspect that harry truman is one of the most under-rated under-remembered presidents of the 20th century

for years, i have wondered if kennedy's lasting popularity is based more upon the myth of camelot than any substance. did he pick the civil rights struggle, or did it pick him? i don't know, but i lean toward the latter.

carter is a great man, i admire him much, but he was to a great degree an ineffectual leader in very troubled times. with that said, i would like to point out that the end of the iran hostage crisis was negotiated by him, not by some mythological fear of ronald reagan. his last hours in office were spent negotiating the release of the hostages. even when the situation was shortly to become someone else's problem, he continued to seek a peaceful resolution. plus, during the meltdown at three mile island, we were very lucky to have a nuclear engineer in office.

oh, to have a president with the moral fiber of carter and clinton's leadership ability.....

I think Truman and Kennedy did OK.
Carter was a nice person, but I think he was too nice. I did not like the way he handled the crisis with Iran. I'm a democrat, but I believe Reagan handled that situation much better.

1. Truman was definitely a war president, and a great reformer, carrying on much of his predecessors projects. He effectively ended the Pacific War and pushed for the European Economic Plan (Marshall Plan), and also for the UN. Great president indeed.

2. Kennedy efectively diverted a major nuclear crisis (Cuban Missile Crisis) and opened up to the Soviets. A OK in my book.

3. Carter, in my opinion, was arguably the worst president of all time. He could not free US captives in Iran, he could not reach any effective deals with the USSR, and he failed domestcially. BAD president, second only to maybe Bush Jr.

Truman - no problem

Kennedy - In all truthfulness this man brought America closer to thermonuclear annihilation than any other president.

Carter - Spinelessness versus Iran, runaway inflation, chronic gas shortages. All by himself, this man fostered the world view that America is a paper tiger.

Truman did his best in Korea, we would have still been fighting there today with the intervention of China. He really can't take a lot of credit for the economy, the returning troops just naturally took over the jobs. give him a 7

Kennedy was a good idealist and if he lived, he would have brought about a lot of social reforms. He was very unpopular with the Washington status quo though. give him a 6 with an *

Carter was just not ready for Politics on a National level, much like Obama today. He did do some good things in the Middle East but overall he was not a good leader. Good ideas though not practical. give him a 4 (and I voted for him...TWICE) LOL

Kennedy - too short a stay to say.
Carter - outrageous that he didn't handle the hostage situation effectively.
Truman - don't have a clue.

Kennedy played a big farce. He used the media to create the myth Kennedy.
Few people know that he was usually heavily medicated and would have been able to survive the Dallas attack if he would not have been wearing a metal corset for his back.
Even though he held this big speech in Berlin where he said "ich bin ein Berliner" he would have sacrificed Berlin instead of standing up for it against Russia.
I am not saying that he was a bad president but he wasn't as good as his myth makes him look. He barely won the presidency, most likely because he made Johnson his vice president which got him a lot of votes from the South.
His support for the civil rights movement is one of his biggest achievements.

Truman: probably the greatest no nonsense president we have ever had....he had the guts and fortitude to stand his ground with the Bomb and McArthur and the resolve to go to bed when the election was still going on
Kennedy: the one with an intense vision for the progress of our nation
Carter: a complete flop as president...too namby pamby
