Wow, what a can of worms. Basically this happened, unarmed marchers were demonstrating for Human Rights in Derry. The RUC had been backed down earlier in the week and so the British sent in the Para's 1st Batt.. The Para's set up sniper post's and manned barricades. Now it is known that the Para CO, Maj. Loden, thought that a show of force would blunt the Provo's which he felt all Irish were. Reports of IRA snipers to Army HQ led to the order to load live ammo. Soon after the first shot was fired. Despite orders to cease fire 100 rounds were fired. Not one of the victims was armed in any way and no IRA action was ordered for the march day.One of the victims, who died of his wounds 4.5 months after being hit, wasn't even involved in the march. He was walking to visit a friend. Another was shot dead as he went to help someone previously shot although he was waving a white flag to display his peaceful intentions.
Not the Brit's finest hour.
