This is a complicated issue to answer here as the Thirty Years War encompassed so many nations and lasted so long. I've given some links that may help you.
James I had married his daughter to the Elector Palatine Frederick in Bohemia and had forged links to the protestant Netherlands. The Spanish (catholic) Habsburgs did not want to lose the strong hold they had held throughout Europe for so long...they therefore tried to overthrow Frederick (Protestant) and to supress Protestantism throughout their 'empire'. Interestingly, the French Cardinal Richleiu was a Catholic yet supported the Protestant cause...he obviously thought that was a lesser evil than letting the Habsburgs win.
James of course had his daughter within this area so Britain became involved although only in a minor way. The main problem with parliament and James was his desire to arrange a Catholic marriage for his son. Parliament wanted a Protestant marriage arranging and also wanted James to go to war with Spain. This was not resolved in James lifetime. Hope that, and the links I've given, help you.
