1. For King and Empire and for the adventure of it all.
I was told that's what my Grandfather and all his mates said when they enlisted. Sadly, those who came back told a different story and many didn't live to come home.

Do yourself a favour and attend the Dawn Service, in your area, on ANZAC Day. You won't regret it.

7. Conscription, compulsory military service for young men, has been a contentious issue throughout Australia's history.
The legislation for compulsory military training was introduced in 1909 by Prime Minister Alfred Deakin, and was passed into law in 1911. This scheme was abolished by the Labor government immediately following its election in October 1929.

Compulsory military service for duty within Australia was revived in 1939, shortly after the outbreak of the Second World War. There was to be no conscription for service overseas, but instead, in a bill passed in February 1943, "Australia" was defined in such a way as to include New Guinea and the adjacent islands. This obliged soldiers in the Citizen Military Force (CMF) to serve in this region, known as the South-West Pacific Area.

Compulsory military training was brought back in 1951 by the Liberal government as the National Service Scheme. The scheme was criticised as being irrelevant to modern defence needs, and for being a drain on the Regular Army's finances and manpower. In 1959 the scheme was abolished. National Service was re-introduced in 1964, and in May 1965 the Liberal government introduced new powers that enabled it to send national servicemen to serve overseas. From 1965 to 1972, 19,450 national servicemen served in the Vietnam War, with 202 killed and 1,279 wounded. The National Service Scheme was abolished on 5 December 1972 by the newly elected Labor government.

9. The Treaty of Versailles was the peace settlement signed after World War One had ended in 1918.
The treaty was signed at the vast Versailles Palace near Paris - hence its title - between Germany and the Allies.
The treaty was signed on June 28th 1919 after months of argument and negotiation amongst the so-called "Big Three" as to what the treaty should contain.
The "Big Three" were David Lloyd George of Britain, Clemenceau of France and Woodrow Wilson of America.

10. The victors from World War One were in no mood to be charitable to the defeated nations and Germany in particular was held responsible for the war and its consequences.

11. Australia entered World War Two, at the very beginning, on the 3rd of September, 1939.
The Prime Minister at that time was Robert Menzies, (later Sir Robert Menzies).
This is part of his radio speech.
"Fellow Australians, it is my melancholy duty to inform you officially, that in consequence of a persistence by Germany in her invasion of Poland, Great Britain has declared war upon her and that, as a result, Australia is also at war. No harder task can fall to the lot of a democratic leader than to make such an announcement."

World War Two Prime Ministers.
Robert Gordon Menzies 26.04.1939 to 28.08.1941

To help out the rest of the British Empire.

14. History of UN Peacekeepers.
The United Nations was set up in 1945, at the end of the Second World War. Australia was a founder member; today almost every country on earth has joined.
Peacekeeping as we know it grew up as a compromise, using minimal force and generally only being employed with the consent of the warring parties. Military observers, usually unarmed, might monitor a ceasefire or peace agreement. Later came peace enforcement operations, in which armed peacekeepers were authorised to use force to prevent further bloodshed. Today more complex peacekeeping operations use a great variety of specialist skills to give societies which have been shattered by war the space in which to rebuild themselves.

7: Referring to compulsory service in the armed forces, the term "conscription" has two main meanings:

* compulsory service, usually of young men of a given age, e.g. 17 – 18, for a set period of time, commonly 1 – 2 years. In the United Kingdom and Singapore this was commonly known as "national service"; in New Zealand, at first compulsory military training and later national service; in Norway, Safeguard Duty/1st time service.
* compulsory service, for an indefinite period of time, in the context of a widespread mobilisation of forces for fighting war, including on the home territory, usually imposed on men in a much wider age group (e.g. 18 – 45)

8: 11th November 1918

9: The Treaty of Versailles was a peace treaty that officially ended World War I. It was signed on June 28, 1919, exactly 5 years after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, one of the events that triggered the start of the war. Although the armistice signed on November 11, 1918 put an end to the actual fighting, it took six months of negotiations at the Paris Peace Conference to conclude a peace treaty. Of the many provisions in the treaty, one of the most important and controversial provisions required Germany and its allies to accept full responsibility for causing the war and, under the terms of articles 231-248, disarm, make substantial territorial concessions and pay reparations to certain countries that had formed the Entente powers. The Treaty was undermined by subsequent events starting as early as 1922 and was widely flouted by the mid thirties.

11: Most historians agree the "world war" started in 1937 or in 1939. The most commonly accepted date is either September 1st or 3rd, 1939.

Adolf Hitler Germany

13: The independent countries in the British Commonwealth - Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa - declared war very shortly after Britain in 1939.

14: Peacekeeping, as defined by the United Nations, is "a way to help countries torn by conflict create conditions for sustainable peace."[1]. Peacekeepers monitor and observe peace processes in post-conflict areas and assist ex-combatants in implementing the peace agreements they may have signed. Such assistance comes in many forms, including confidence-building measures, power-sharing arrangements, electoral support, strengthening the rule of law, and economic and social development. Accordingly UN peacekeepers (often referred to as Blue Beret because of their light blue helmets) can include soldiers, civilian police officers, and other civilian personnel.

It caused alot of trouble os Australia because when the referendum was held the majority said they didn't want it, but it was brought in anyway due to the dwindling numbers of the army.

8.1918

9. The treaty of versaille was basically the surrender agreement between France and Germany. It was probably one of the worst things for Germany at the time because under the treaty of Versaille the French were given Germany's prime agriculturual land and industrial real estate. Germany had just come out of a war themselves and could hardly support another country. By giving up most of their "money making" land they were thrown into nation wide poverty.
