Question:hello I'm assuming you're meaning during the Civil War. The south had an extremely minimal industrial base (to build weapons, ships, boots etc) whereas the North had a strong industrial base.

The south need more supplies than the north because the north had many factories and the south only had farms pretty much. They're land was much more fertile which is why they wanted slaves to do all the work. Personally I always thought that the south were incredibly cruel. I live in Illinois and i'm proud to be in the north!

The two answers about southern Industry are correct. They were also blockaded, fairly successfully by what was first called the Anaconda Plan, proposed by General Scott, where no material was to be allowed into or out of southern ports in the Atlantic or Gulf of Mexico, or across the border states of Kentucky, Maryland or Delaware.

The fictional Captain Butler, in Gone With the Wind, was a blockade runner.
