Even though the colony was abandoned at one time, settlers did return to it. It was basically the first successful English settlement in the New World and paved the way for more colonies to be settled. Because of it's success, the British made more settlements. Because of that, and later events, English law and language became the basic tenants in government. Also since the first elected officials were here, eventually becoming the House of Burgess, you could say democracy in the New World began here.
It's settlement also set the tone for actions and interactions toward the native peoples.

It gave the Virginia Co. The largest land claim in North America. So we were mostly settled by the English.

It was the first succesful settlement in North America. It was also of course the setting for the famous story of John Smith and Pocahontas, America's first heroine.
