Nixon was a very intelligent man but he was more than a little paranoid. He felt that the student protesters were traitors and he was very anxious to find out how influenced by Communist agents they were. In fact the Communist party was of little interest to Americans, although the hippies were very willing to believe that the government constantly lied. (They were right.)
The Oliver Stone movie "Nixon" starring Anthony Hopkins as Nixon is a fair assessment of his character.
BTW, he was a traitor to his Quaker roots. Quakers were horrified by his war policies.

The same reason that 300 FBI records "some how" illegally appeared in the Clinton Whitehouse during their term.

The same reason that the FBI had recordings of Martin Luther King jr. in motel rooms with differtent women while Robert F. Kennedy was the Attorney General.

The same reason ther L.B. Johnson had the FBI spy on all his opposition.

Because they can do it.

Nixon was paranoid. He had an insane belief that there were these groups of people out there that wished to do him harm. And while, as a Republican President, he was right to an extent. But he took it to a ridiculous level.

It's one thing to worry about somebody in a crowd... but to be suspicious of your family, friends, cabinet, and the general public. The man was insane. I would believe if you said he once had the FBI do a background check on his dog.
