The largest land empire was the Mongol's under Kublai Khan, from the Pacific Ocean to Central Europe in an unbroken reach.

definatly the Roman Empire. Diocleatian had to split it into two just to control it. America hasnt been around as long as the Roman empire has. just crack open any history book and the proof is on the table.

But they failed to take Syria, despite efforts continuing for over half a century. They could not overcome the resistance of the Mamluks, slave-soldiers who dominated the government and army of Egypt.

I would agree, as far as breadth of territory, the Mongols. But it's arguable that the Roman Empire impacted more people, as the lands they controlled were more densely populated.
