Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: i mean did it unite them or what

The intention of those ancient games was that, for the brief period of the games, the city states of that part of the world, who might normally be at war with each other, could get together and meet on neutral ground and engage in more friendly competition, to honor their best athletes and to honor their gods.

The modern olympic games were created for similar reasons, except that too often, the games are politicized, and it turns out that a nation's "medal count" seems more meaningfull than the athlete's individual performance. Also, look at the current example of the political protest of the Tibetan separatists, who are demonstating along the route of the Olympic torch, voicing their opinions that as long as The People's Republic of China claims Tibet as their own, they should not be hosting the Olympics.

They have the right to their opinion, but their attempt to stop the games goes against the reason for having the games in the first place. After all, most competitive sports have yearly championsip competitions all the time. The Olympics offers the opportunity for ALL major sports atheletes to get together and display their talents for all the world to see at one venue. I was thoroughly ticke off when the US decided to boycott the Moscow Olympics and the Soviets retaliated by boycotting the Los Angeles games. The athletes were angry too. It was the GOVERNMENTS that made those decisions.

In the ancient games, there were no flag waving ceremonies and colorful uniforms in national colors. The athletes competed in the nude, so as NOT to identify with any particular city state. I believe that the current games should be done in a simialar manner, not as one nation's athletes agains another's. If not in the nude, then, perhaps, ALL olympic uniforms should be a single color, such as white. No national anthems or flags, and, the medal count can wait until the games were over.

For the brief period of the games, there was peace.
