Also influential means importance, not necesarily meaning that it is "good". Thanks Adolph Hitler Franklin Roosevelt Mao Tse Tung Fidel Castro Pope Paul Ayatolla Kohemeni Bill Gates Thomas Edison Leonardo Di Vinci Jonas Salk I think the actions of these people were very influential in making the world what it is today. Of course there are many others such as Albert Einstein that could be on the list. One could even include Warren Buffett. I don't know if I can come up with ten, but I would say Napoleon Bonaparte, as his imperial initiatives were basically the impetus for the Congress of Vienna in 1815, which was the first attempt at a "concert" of European powers all working in harmony. Thus modern diplomacy was born. Also, earlier but just as important, Martin Luther, whose ideas led to the split in the Church and the effects of that are immeasurable. After that, I suppose it would have to be Karl Marx, whose ideas are still affecting the world, as can be seen in the example of China. While Chinese Communism is not unadulterated Marxism, it is still based on Marxist ideas. Also, I would put my vote in for Emmeline Pankhurst, who fought for women's suffrage in Britain and America. The addition of so many millions of voters to the registers surely had an effect on modern history. Maybe Adolf Hitler, but definitely Stalin, whose foreign policy (even after his death in 1953) fed the Cold War mentality that prevailed until 1989. All of these are from a political point of view however and my answers would be different for technological progress or art, etc. |
