Question:Im writing a story based in 1850 and the main characters are three 18 year old goth boys but im not sure if there were goths in that time period.
can anyone tell if there was?

Yes, for the purposes of fiction, although gothic was the usage rather than goth. Look at Mary Shelley, Byron and Polidori and Geneva. Gothic fiction was born in the mid-late 18th century.

Not 'goths' as we think of them - for one thing, there was no 'scene' and no way to share the pop culture memes that lead to that kind of thing. There were morose, shy, sickly looking people around back then; they weren't particularly liked either, though for more practical reasons (not able to do much useful work).

If you mean Goths as is Visigoths, Ostrogoths, et al. then no, they were just Europeans by then. If you mean Goths as people who wear lots of black and read too many vampire novels then again no, they didn't exist yet.
