Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: How did Louisiana effect the United States????????/

The Louisiana Purchase is greatly misunderstood. The long term effect was doubling the size of the USA. However, the immediate effect was giving the USA control of New Orleans.

The port of New Orleans is still one of the busiest ports in the world and at that time, controlling that port meant you controlled most of the exportation of goods produced between the Appalachians and the Rockies. This immediately impacted the ability to regulate, tax and promote the growth of what would become our midwestern and southcentral states. Whoever controlled New Orleans controlled the growth of the interior of the north American continent (well, excluding Mexico).

The rest of the Louisiana Purchase was gravy, but a what fantastic gravy it became. The agricultural and industrial production from this area is still a major portion of the US GDP. And most of that that goes overseas leaves via the port of New Orleans.

If you are talking about the $15 million purchase from France, it doubled the USA's territory.

About one third of the land area of the continental U. S. came from the Louisiana Purchase.
Thankfully, Napoleon needed money for his army and he was willing to sell.
