The pay issue. When Morgan Freeman walked up to the paymaster and he was told to make his mark, it sort of set the mood. The reduced rate of pay, reflected the viewpoint of the War Department, I suppose. They had been used as contrabands at first, and I guess they may have tried to justify it by saying a laborer doesn't rate the full $13.00 a month that a soldier gets. This was finally resolved by the end of the war, but it took over a year to prove they were able to "ante up and kick in like men" (beautiful line, splendidly delivered by Mr. Freeman as well).
