The Italians had a way of switching teams mid-game that allowed them to sit beside the winners in both World Wars.

It's interesting to read German Divisional histories from the Second World War as they describe their Italian Allies and their penchant for switching sides. The Germans understood the Italians only too well.

it was a minor partner because originally, Italy was on Germany's side and joined the Allies (Us, France, great britain) afterwards.
