1. Avoid a 2 front War. The germans were defeated as they tried to take on too many opponents at the same time.

2. Avoid imperial overstretch. This refers to Japan who tried to hold on to too many territories on a limited industrial base.

3. Appeasement does not work. cf. Britain's appeasement to germany in 1938.The only way for a country to be safe is to have a strong and credible defence force. It should also have the will to fight to defend their interests. This willingness to go to war to protect vital interests should be recognised by the other countries.

4. Coordinate war efforts with your allies. The allied powers won as their war strategy was coordinated. They aided one another militarily and produced synergy. This was absent for the Axis Powers. Japan and germany never helped each other militarily. If Japan had invaded Russia simultaneously with Germany, the outcome would have been very different.

5. Adopt a strategy of trading space for time if you're faced with an invading force and cannot overcome it in the short term. Save your forces for the long run rather than get them destroyed in a vain attempt to hold ground. China adopted that strategy against japan, Russia did it against Germany. Both were successful. In contrast, Hitler told the german armies to hold firm to the conquered Russian territories and lost the entire 6th Army.
